Fueling smuggling

Comparison of petrol prices per litre in West Africa — Data: SBM Intelligence

Petrol in Nigeria costs less than half of what it costs in all of our neighbouring countries, and just about half what it costs in Liberia and Sierra Leone, the next cheapest countries in West Africa. On another hand, Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption numbers vary wildly depending on who your source is, and periodic spikes in consumption numbers constantly go unexplained. The subsidy regime in Nigeria provides an economic incentive for smuggling Nigerian petrol to our neighbours.

My colleagues put together a video that I’m very proud of on this matter…

The report which was published last week was also picked up by the Cable, who did an excellent infographic, and The Guardian, whose piece is very well researched.

We have a huge problem, and we keep pretending.

Using big data to understand West Africa one country (or is it region?) at a time.
