Nigeria’s Crisis of Trust: A Broken Legal System

Nigeria’s mistrust in its legal system is highlighted by recent controversies, including the current one involving the NIUK Community
and the one that followed the “Sex For Grades” scandal a few years ago.

Only one person went to court — a white guy — and he did not go to a Nigerian court. The Nigerians aired their grievances on social media. The same is happening with the NIUK thing as we speak.

Nigeria’s legal system is perceived as corrupt, inefficient, and inaccessible, fueling reliance on informal justice. Comprehensive reforms are needed because progress cannot be made without the rule of law.
