Interestingly, many think Rishi becoming PM is a “victory” for progressive politics. Rishi may be of Asian heritage, but he is first and foremost of the establishment.

It’s a similar dynamic I saw in the US pre-Trump’s victory. So many pollsters saw my friends in Houston and assumed they’d vote for Hillary simply because they were Black.

That kind of identity politics makes for a lot of flawed analyses.

Remaining with my Trump example, most Igbo-Americans are Catholic, like any Igbo person, attuned to small government and lower taxes. A message that the Republicans preach. That messaging would resonate with the average Igbo-American more than the Democrats’ message of gay rights and higher taxes.

The world may be getting browner, but the one thing that will not change is class. William Windsor will identify more with Rohan Murty than he would with a random Bill Priestly because though Windsor and Priestly are both English while Murty is Indian, Murty and Windsor are of the same class and have been walking through the same doors since childhood. Priestly’s career highlight was as a private in the British Army…
