Quick one on voter turnout in ani Igbo
Speaking of the low voter turnout that we’ve normalised in ani Igbo, the questions that any politician will ask when we’re being critical of them, local, state or federal level, are, “Why should I listen to you? Will you even vote?”
We need to start taking politics seriously.
To be fair, however, there are reasons for the current apathy. One very recent one is that people in Imo voted for a particular guy, the FG then used the Supreme Court to remove that guy — then made the fourth place person governor. This illegitimate governor then appointed the present Ohanaeze president.
As all this happened, not many major Igbo political figures challenged it. This lack of cojones will lead to apathy, so that is to be expected.
But it’s becoming a vicious cycle, which we have to break.
But that only explains the recent apathy of a 3% turnout in the Abia bye-elections this weekend past. We also have to ask, what about poor turnouts in historical elections, e.g the poor turnout that helped CC Onoh to rig and beat Jim Nwobodo? Standing by the sidelines guarantees the worst possible outcomes will continue to emerge to “represent” us.
This is the cycle that we need to break.
